Ahmedabad: Will the city be grey or green? That's the question before Ahmedabad's citizens and its civic body as a slew of mega civic projects swamp the city, from Bus Rapid Transit System to Kankaria Lake Front Development, Sabarmati River Front Development and numerous other flyovers and railway overbridges. This rapid infrastructural development spree in Ahmedabad appears to be coming at the cost of the city's green cover with indiscriminate felling of trees making way for major civic projects. More than 650 trees will be sacrificed for construction of the first stretch of the ambitious BRTS in Ahmedabad on the RTO-Pirana-Narol-Naroda-Danilimda route. However , AMC officials maintain that now every mega project is designed keeping in mind the global warming scenario. Deputy Municipal Commissioner , ZA Sacha said, "Greening in the civic projects are now an integral part of it. We are making sure that less number of trees is cut down and also more trees are planted on the available space. We are focusing on proper green management in the city." Kankaria lakefront coming up in the heart of the city is also now going to be a green zone. "KLFD is the best example of this. The greenery here would be tripled from its existing green cover. More than 6,000 trees are planted here in a zig zag shape and the outer ring of Kankaria will have asopalav trees and other different species on the stretch," said a senior AMC official. At present, the stretch from Shivranjani to Memnagar is now a barren land with not much greenery left as the first stretch of BRTS project from RTO-Piranna saw indiscriminate cutting of trees. Around 400 trees, mostly full-grown , were cut down on the IIM-Memnagar stretch. "In this concretization mode of development, we need to integrate plants, trees, bushes and grasses too for a soothing journey. Greenery will be an important aspect as this whole system is about cutting down environmental pollution," said the official.
