Islamic organisation plants 10,000 seedlings to combat desert encroachment

Jigawa State’s Jama’atu Nasrul Islam (JNI) in northern Nigeria has said that it had planted 10,000 assorted seedlings to combat desertification in the state. The JNI Secretary in the state, Alhaji Muhammad Babangida, who made made this known in Dutse on Monday, said that the exercise was launched on October 15, in College of Health Science and Technology Jahun, in Jahun Local Government Area, where 250 of the seedlings were planted. He explained that the remaining 9,750 seedlings were planted in the other 27 local government areas of the state through the JNI’s branches in the respective kocal governments. The secretary added that the seedlings planted were those of neem and moringa tress. According to him, the initiative was for the association to complement government’s efforts in combating the menace. Babangida noted that the gesture is to show the general public that the duty of JNI does not stop only at preaching and that it was also involved in reventing desert encroachment in the state.
