Israeli scientists said on Monday they had developed a revolutionary way to accelerate tree and plant growth by up to 50 per cent and possibly help restore depleted rain forests worldwide. Armed with a "gene gun" and a Petri dish, scientists at a Hebrew University branch in the central Israel town of Rehovot have been inserting a cellulose-binding gene known as CBD into plant cells, the building blocks of trees and crops.
