For this 44 per cent residents, a scheme has been drawn up by the DJB for supplying water through private and government tankers. The BJP has asked Lt-Governor Najeeb Jung to issue a white paper on the status of water supply by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) along with the role of private and government tankers. Taking up the issue, the party’s Delhi unit chief Harsh Vardhan said with the onset of summer, complaints about shortage of water, supply of contaminated water and overcharging by the tanker mafia start pouring in and that the government should be ready with solutions. He demanded that the L-G bring out a white paper on water supply in summer months. “The government framed a summer action plan on water and also publicised it. If that plan is being implemented, then there should not be any shortage of water in Delhi. According to the latest survey of the Institute of Objective Studies, 56 per cent of Delhi residents are supplied piped water by the DJB. The rest 44 per cent are at the mercy of private water suppliers. For this 44 per cent residents, a scheme has been drawn up by the DJB for supplying water through private and government tankers. Under this scheme, Delhi has been divided into 22 areas, where 25 emergency water supply centres have been set up,” Harsh Vardhan said. Claiming that the tanker system was fully under the control of the water mafia, Harsh Vardhan claimed these tankers charge Rs 1,200 for 600 litres of water, which he said was not fit for drinking. “Sixty per cent people who consume this water are infected with stomach diseases. In order to protect themselves from water-borne diseases, they resort to buying bottled water, which costs Rs 20 to Rs 40 per litre,” he said.
