March 9: IT major Wipro has set an example of eco-friendliness through its car-pooling facility which enables employees to share rides rather than use individual vehicles. "As many as 5,000 extra rides are prevented with the I dynamic carpooling facility and we are developing a tool to measure the reduction in carbon footprint because of that," said Mr B.Krishnamurthy, vice president and centre head of Wipro Hyderabad. In addition, an automatic switch off tool helps the company save power and water by turning off appliances when not in use. Further, a paper recycling unit has helped it to reduce wastage of paper prints by 60 percent. The eco-friendly initiative began in Wipro campus in Bengaluru i through the Eco-Eye programme and as part of that the Eco Forum was formed. The forum helped in reducing the wastage of food in the cafeteria by converting it into biogas equivalent to the fuel produced by six commercial cylinders of LPG daily. The biogas is used for cooking in the campus kitchen. In addition, the used paper in the campus is shredded and converted into notepads in the in-house recycling plant. The Eco Avenue at the Bengaluru campus houses a bio-gas plant, paper recycling plant and a sewage treatment plant, among other eco-projects. "Plans are afoot to replicate the same ecologically sustainable initiatives at other Wipro campuses in ^ the country," said Mr Brij Seti, vice-president of Eco-Eye at Wipro Bengaluru.
