When Sunderlal Bahuguna and his followers in the Himalayan foothills hugged pine trees to protect them from the timber mafia's axe on one could have imagined that the Chipko movement would reincarnate itself 30 years later in Mumbai. The spirited campaign by the Friends of Trees (FoT) and some residents of Prabhadevi to save two century-old rain trees on Veer Savarkar Marg clearly shows that the Chipko movement is alive.
