MCD officials today said the engineered sanitary landfill site, which the civic body is developing at Jaitpur, will be ready by December this year. The site will be available for disposing of garbage for a period of seven years, after which, it will be beautified, officials said. A team comprising MCD Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta, Councillor Rajni Abbi, Councillor Mehek Singh, Additional Commissioner (engineering) Naresh Kumar, Engineer-in-chief Ravi Dass and others inspected the site today. The site, which will have the capacity to handle 1,000 metric ton waste per day, is being developed on 24.6 acres, and has been handed over to the corporation by the Delhi government, officials said. Steps have been taken to prevent collection of gases and leachate, which contaminate ground water, at the landfill, officials said. "Private partners will develop the site. The contractor will undertake landfill management and will be responsible for its beautification after the site is filled up years later,' Gupta said. Delhi has three landfill sites
