The Delhi high court on Wednesday asked the archaeological survey of India to explain why the 355-year old Jama Masjid in the heart of the capital has not been declared a protected monument under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.Asking ASI to file an affidavit in this regard, the bench of chief justice B.C. Patel and Justice Sanjay Kishan posted the matter for further hearing on April 27. It emphasised that Jama Masjid, built by the mughal Emperor shahjahan in 1650, was a part of history and culture of Delhi, and it should be preserved. The court also sought a report from Wakf Survey Commission on the property. The bench, which pursued the minutes of the meeting between asi and Delhi wakf Board, as per the earlier orders of the court, expressed dissatisfaction over the progress made in this regard.
