The 29-km long embankment from Sitalmari to Doboka town along the left bank of river Jamuna built by the Irrigation Department in 1993 is breaking apart at seven different places. Though the Irrigation Department has temporarily managed to plug the breaches, floods in recent years has aggravated the problem. This particular embankment was built at a cost of Rs 3 crore to protect 2,000 hectares of cultivable land of 29 villages under the Jamuna Irrigation Command Area Development, Hojai division. The project also has an extensive canal network to collect the excess water for irrigation purposes. The embankment also protects the road to Doboka town for the inhabitants of several villages from the ravages of flood. People here allege that the project is in severe financial strain as funds have not been released on time. Although a sum of Rs 2 lakh was released under the MLA Development Programme to repair the embankment, the sum was to less and too late. Experts say that proper flood management is required to protect the embankment from been completely washed away. Meanwhile, the Irrigation Department has prepared a report for the permanent restoration of the embankment at an estimated cost of Rs 3 crore to the State Government. The MLA of Jamunamukh Sirajuddin Ajmal has moved the Water Resources Ministry to take immediate steps to protect the embankment. It may be mentioned that the Kopili Hydro Electricity project and the ambitious Jamuna Irrigation project are considered to be major factors for the development of the area, both in terms of electricity generation and irrigation purposes. Under the projects, the Government constructed two dykes, one on the left bank of Jamuna river and the other on the right bank of Kopili river. But constant floods have caused severe damage to the dyke on Jamuna river, endangering the lives of many villagers. Condition of Morigaon bus stand resented: People are peeved at the deplorable condition of the bus stand by the side of National Highway 31 at Haiborgaon which is also the oldest bus stand in Nagaon town. This bus stand caters to more than 80 buses in a single day and is the lifeline of commuters of south-west Nagaon including Morigaon. Commuters complain that the stand lacks sufficient parking space for the buses and as such the buses are parked haphazardly on both sides of the national highway causing traffic snarls. The bus stand also lacks litter boxes and as such the whole bus stand is littered with garbage making it unhygienic. People also allege that many hawkers and petty businessmen have set up shops in the bus stand thereby congesting the bus stand. This they say also poses security problems. Anchalik panchayat formed: The anchalik panchayat of Khagarijau and Rupahihat has been formed by the Congress in two separate oath-taking ceremony of the elected members at the Khagarijan block office and Rupahihat block office. In Khagarijan, BDO Hari Prasad Bora administered the oath of office to 11 members, out of which four are from Congress. Pramod Bora was chosen as president and Himashree Raja was chosen as vice-president. In Rupahihat, the oath of office was administered by circle officer Puspanjalee Das. The meeting elected Saiful Islam as president and Usha Khaklari as vice-president. It amy be mentioned that Promode Bora elected as president of Khagarijan anchalik panchayat is the youngest among all the presidents of Nagaon district. AUDF pooh poohs defection: The AUDF has termed the defection of four its party workers joining the Congress as stage managed and said that it was done under the influence of money and manipulation. Working president of the State committee of AUDF Rashid Ahmed Chaudhury said that the Congress has no respect for democratic norms and alleged that the four AUDF workers were forced by Congress activists to defect.
