Scientists are winning a battle to end the ancient terror of a killer volcano's blasting unexpectedly to life, and the eruption of Mount Usu is proof. When the volcano shot superheated steam and ash into the air, the small towns and villages at its base were largely empty. Scientists like Yoshio Katsui had accurately read the warning signs and had forecast the eruption.
