Jatha against SEZ enters Rambilli

The 8-day Jatha campaigning against the coastal corridor and special economic zone (SEZ) entered the Vizag district at Rambilli on Thursday. The Jatha, being organised by Coastal Corridor Nirmana Vyatireka Porata Samithi is doing rounds of the villages of Rambilli and Achyutapuram mandals to be affected by the SEZ multi-product schemes. The Jatha set off on April 20 from Baruva of Sompeta mandal in Srikakulam district and entered Vizianagaram district after covering six mandals. It also covered Pusapatirega and Bhogapuram mandals in Vizianagaram before entering Visakhapatnam. In all the Jatha covered 12 mandals and entering S. Rayavaram mandal on Friday. It would culminate into a public meeting at Kakinada on April 27. The committee convenor, Mr K.S. Chalam, and the Human Rights Forum state secretary, Mr V.S. Krishna, demanded scrapping of GO No. 34 relating to Coastal Corridor and the SEZ Act of 2005. They said coastal corridor and the SEZ would take away the livelihood of fisherfolk all along the coast from itchapuram in Srikakulam district and Tada in Nellore and also artisan, farmers and the agricultural labourers. "It is nothing short of looty of natural resources for the benefit of the corporate sector,'' Mr Chalam told this reporter. Mr Krishna said the coastal corridor the government hopes to bring about all along the coast would spell death knell to the fisherfolk community. A public meeting in this regard would be held in the city on May 3 which would be addressed by Ms Medha Patkar and Mr K. Balagopal, Mr Krishna said.
