New Delhi: Union environment minister Jayanthi Natarajan on Monday said, “I shall reject any project recommended for clearing without adhering to the Forest Rights Act (FRA) and the ministry’s order.” This was in response to a TOI story on the Forest Advisory Committee violating ministry directive while clearing projects.
The August 2009 directive by the MoEF requires the panel to ensure the affected gram sabhas pass resolutions affirming the implementation of the Act is complete, and that all rights have been recognized.
Sources said forest bureaucracy had tried to get a stamp for withdrawing the 2009 order, but Natarajan rejected it reaffirming UPA’s commitment to the Act. TNN
