Despite the wood mafias having succeeded to an extent in their efforts to smuggle out trees, the effort of the forest defence group (FDG) has successfully brought back the green cover, as the plantation drive by the forest department and the FDG has produced good results. Under a scheme introduced by the FDG, if anybody is found guilty of cutting a tree, he will have to plant one hundred as punishment. Under the scheme, over two lakh trees have been planted in a block of Simdega district of the State in the last six months. The declining forest cover has prompted the forest department to form the FDG, to look after the forest. Barku and his wife of Girijore village in Simdega district are such an example as they were found guilty of felling two trees. They are now meeting the target set up by the FDG.
