Hazaribagh, Aug. 19: Hazaribagh deputy commissioner Manish Ranjan yesterday put the ball in Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board’s (JSP CB) court, asking it to take a call on cancellation and re-organisation of a public hearing that was held on May 16. The hearing — organised by Reliance Power to determine compensation to residents in exchange for their land — had hit the headlines after police let their batons loose on a group of agitators, opposed to the project in front of Town hall. Among those injured in the lathicharge was Barkagaon MLA Yogendra Sao. “The meeting was scheduled to be held in Town hall, which is around 48km from Keredari, the area Reliance was looking at. It hence did violated norms,” a source said. Moreover, a sizeable number of villagers had failed to turn up for the hearing as the Maoists had also given a bandh call on that day. In his letter, the DC mentioned names of prominent leaders like Union tourism minister Subodh Kant Sahay, former CPI MP Bhuvaneshwar Prasad Mehta and CPM district secretary Ganesh Kumar Verma — all of who had demanded cancellation of the hearing. He also said the controversial meeting was held according to JSPCB guidelines, which had chosen Town Hall as the venue. It has also mentioned the Maoist threat.
