BY AMIT S. UPADHYE Oct. 1: It had all the elements of human drama - courage, ingenuity, grit and imagination. Except, in this case, in a scene straight out of Jungle Book, a herd of elephants came to the rescue of a calf that fell into a well at Bannerghatta National Park (BNP). The successful `Operation Jumbo Rescue' which lasted well into the night only proved' what has been widely suspected - the largest land mammal is highly intelligence and it's social behaviour duplicates the human. The rescue came when a herd of elephants, largely juveniles and calves, were raiding a millet farm on the fringe of the forest. Alerted by their march, a few villagers and forest officers watched as an elephant calf, running ahead accidentally fell into a dry 20 foot deep open well. The elephants, grazing on the millet and jackfruit were drawn by the pitiful cries of the baby elephant. "Within no time, about four elephants formed a line all the way to the well, and held tails. The first elephant bent into the well and tried to pull the calf out. But the slush in the field made the rescue difficult,". a BNP officer said. Every time, the calf slipped back into the well, the elephants would reform the tail to trunk chain and try again. "Finally around 5 am, the elephants managed to pull the calf out. The herd: raid forgotten, rested, calming the calf for at least half an hour before trooping back into the jungles.
