The man-elephant conflict in the district seems to have no immediate solution in sight. Recurrent incidents of depredation caused by marauding herds of jumbos in forest and riverine areas have taken a toll on life and property. Even as there are reports of incursions by elephants in the riverine areas along Neamati in north Jorhat, the resident tuskers at Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary near Mariani are leaving a trail of destruction in Kathalguri, Pukhuria and Meleng areas. The 28-odd elephants are wreaking havoc in the fringe areas of the sanctuary, home to the hoolock gibbon. Scattered in small groups, the jumbos have been increasingly targeting human dwellings and granaries since the beginning of this month. The marauders pulled down ten houses in the Pukhuria area a couple of days back, triggering a public backlash against the local Forest Department office. The Forest Department is hardly well-equipped to tackle the jumbo menace. With a single vehicle and inadequate manpower, they are finding the task of keeping the elephants under control an unequal one, sources.
