Justice still eludes Behala oil victims

A decade after the Behala adulterated oil tragedy which took the lives of 37 people, many who survived with stricken limbs are still awaiting justice. Memories of the tragedy in July 1988 prompted the state government (West Bengal) to take precaution as soon as word reached here of people dying in Delhi last week after consuming adulterated mustard oil. Of the 592 who took ill in 1988 from the effect of TCF--a toxic chemical that was mixed with rapeseed oil --262 people are paralysed. They lead a miserable life on dole as most can't work. Efforts by the Patients' Welfare Committee to secure justice for the victims have been in vain.
