Kadapa SEZs fail to take off

Kadapa Sept. 25: Efforts to establish a special economic zone (SEZ) in Kadapa district failed. A total of 5,000 acres acquired from poor farmers for establishment of an SEZ is lying vacant. The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Raja-sekhar Reddy, had allocated land to Infosys and Raheja companies in September 2007 for establishment of a mini IT SEZ in Kadapa city. A total of 5,000 acres were also allocated on the Pulivendula road for establishment of an industrial SEZ. The government and private lands were allocated at Tadikuntla and Kopparthi areas for this. The Yogi Vemana University, several residential private colleges and engineering colleges were set up in the area. Basic amenities were also provided. However, works relating to IT and industrial SEZs failed to take off. Industrialists from Sri Lanka evinced interest to set up a garments factory at Tadigotla and Kopparthi areas. However, they sought lands in Siddavatam mandal near the national highway for establishment of the garment factory. The Bramhani steel factory management also constructed only a compound wall, stating that it was yet to get permission from various agencies.
