For years, the Kani tribals have lived in darkness in the reserve forests of Kanyakumari. But not any longer. The district administration has begun a project to light up the hamlets and has already finished installing solar lamps at Manalodai. The district has sent a Rs 2 crore proposal to the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency for provision of solar street lamps and lanterns in 34 of the 61 Kani hamlets. District Collector Gagandeep Singh Bedi distributed 1,295 community certificates and 492 identity cards, sanctioned 273 ration cards and pension to 11 senior citizens.
