THE CPM on Monday declared that it will begin efforts to forge an alternative to the Congress and the BJP. Mr Prakash Karat, who was re-elected as the CPM's general secretary at the party congress here, said a new front was required to combat the BJP and the Congress. "We have to immediately create a third alternative which can offer the people a policy platform distinct from the two mainstream political forces led by the Congress and the BJP,' Mr Karat said while addressing the concluding session of the party congress. Mr Karat, who put the two national parties in the enemy column, said there was a need to ideologically, politically and electorally counter "communal forces' and the "flag-bearers of pro-Americanism in the economic and foreign policy arena'. Mr Karat said the party had taken a tactical position after the last elections to support the Congress-led government as it was seen as an effective way to arrest the BJP's forward movement. "And, now it was time for a re-look at this tactic.' The CPM general secretary promised his party cadre that the leadership will resist the attempts to make India a junior ally of the United States. The leadership had two days ago told the party congress that it will formally convey its stand against the government wrapping up the India-specific safeguards and approaching the NSG for a waiver
