The Karnataka Government will introduce a Bill in the next budget session to regulate utilisation of groundwater sources. The Bill will provide for Government takeover of private tubewells, irrigation pumps and borewells during severe water shortages. The Bill provides for compensation to the owners during the takeover. There will also be a restriction on the number of borewells that are drilled. No borewell will be permitted within 1,500 feet of an existing one.
