Kenyan greens file suit to stop forest clearance

A leading Kenyan green group said yesterday it had filed a suit to block a government forest clearance plan, branding the scheme a political ploy that would cause irreversible environmental damage. The government said last month it would clear 170,000 acres (69,000 hectares) of woodland to house landless squatters, despite criticism from activists who say the policy is aimed at winning support ahead of next year's elections.
