A survey conducted in 26 selected rivers of Kerala, in connection with a World Bank-aided project implemented through the National Agriculture Technology, has found that about 140 species of endemic river fishes are considerably declining in the rivers of the State. The survey was undertaken as a part of preparing the first elaborate database of fishes in the State, which has the largest endemic river fish species in the country, including 16 exclusive world varieties that are facing extinction.
