The construction of Khuga dam is expected to conclude during the next month and the dam is likely to be inaugurated by the first week of June by the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. In this connection the Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh along with other ministers of the State visited the dam site to conduct an inspection recently. The overall construction of the dam is almost complete and it will soon be functional, giving relief from water scarcity and erratic power supply in the State. However, the power generation which is the main component of the dam will not be operational at the time of inauguration of the dam since it will take another 3 to 4 months to complete, said the superintending engineer IFCD, N Karunacharja who is overall in-charge of the constructions. The construction project is known as "head work' and consists of spillway gates which are four in number, escape channel for the water to flow and power generation to produce electricity and all of them are still under construction. However, among the four gates one gate is already completed and the rest are likely to be complete by the end of the next month before the inauguration takes place in June, he said. He also stated that the main contractor of the dam was the National Project Construction Corporation (NPCC) which had already left, and now the project was under the IFCD for more than a month. The radial gates are working under RM Sinha and Company of Kolkata. The Central government had approved a sum of Rs 335.15 crore for the project, and so far Rs 300 crore had been invested for the overall construction which started in 1982.
