K Y Vijay Kumar | ENS Chennai IF you experience a black-out in your home at 8 pm on Friday , don't get shocked. It might be the work of a young one at your home, resolved to act against global warming. More than 600 children from several city schools, including Santhome Higher Secondary School, Rosary Matriculation School and Bharathy Vidyalaya Matriculation School, Ayanavaram, on Saturday pledged to switch off lights in their homes at 8 pm on August 8, for eight minutes to highlight the adverse effects of global warming. Chanting '88888 Lights Out', as the campaign organised by Exnora International is called, the students took out a procession from Lighthouse to Vivekananda Illam on Saturday to create awareness of global warming. Besides, they pledged to request eight of their relatives and an equal number of friends and neighbours to switch off lights in their homes on the D-Day. Flagging off the procession and later addressing the participants, Dr AM Chinnappa, Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore, pledged his support in the fight against global warming. "The Vatican pope himself had said that polluting the environment is a dire sin. More awareness is necessary among the public on the adverse consequences of global warming,'' he said.
