Children in national Capital are suffering more than the adults from eye cancer. The worrying trend was revealed in an RTI reply and is a major cause of concern vis-à-vis the health of children across Delhi.
The data provided by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to RTI activist Zeeshan Haider, has revealed that dreaded disease is also increasing among adults from the past three years. Since 2015, a total of 297 children were diagnosed with eye cancer compared to which only four adults were detected with the disease. 30 males and 10 females detected with the disease whereas 285 children diagnosed in 2016 which was a slight dip from the previous year.
The RTI further reveals that a total of 393 kids have been diagnosed with the eye cancer in 2017-18 whereas the number of male and female diagnosed with the disease is far less 62 and 39 atAIIMS. According to the data, between 2012 and 2018 eight patients diagnosed with the eye cancer died.
According to Dr Gagan Saini, oncologist, Max hospital Vaishali, the cancer is more prone to the children under five years of age. “Also the child who suffers from eye cancer is having chances of bone cancer.”
“While this cancer of the eye is rare, it does have a very distinguishing characteristic and that is the white eye reflex. White eye reflex or leucocoria is an abnormal white reflection from the retina of the eye due to the presence of the tumor.
Parents who may see this in children should see an eye specialist immediately,” said Saini.
In the RTI it was also revealed that there is no separate facility for cancer patients at Dr. R P centre, AIIMS. “Separate bed facility for cancer patients is not available in the centre. There are total 310 beds in the RP centre and beds are allotted as per the patient's requirement”. Stated the institute when Haider made a query to know how many beds are reserved for the cancer patients.
