Ranchi, Aug. 3: For 16 students of city-based Sapphire International School, flying a space craft at Nasa's space research centre at Albama in the US will become a reality this October.
This is the first time that state students are going to Nasa. The school management is currently preparing the final list of students from Class III to VII, who will be chosen for the trip.
The students, aged nine-14 years, will leave on October 5 with their principal Anupama Singh and a science teacher.
The chairman of the school managing committee, Rohit Sahu, told The Telegraph that it would be a nine-day trip and application for the visas of team members would be sent by the end of this month.
"A Nasa representative from Bangalore, Sudhir Kumar, had come to our school for inspection 20 days ago. After being satisfied with the up-to-date techniques adopted by us to impart education and with the interaction level of the children, he recommended that the school send its students for the unique experience,' Sahu said, adding that students of three other foreign schools have been selected for the experience.
A school teacher said that students are being selected on the basis of their interest and performance in science subjects. Another teacher said that the students would get to do experiments on zero gravity with the help of Nasa scientists and interact with astronauts. The students, the teacher said, would also get a taste of flying and landing the space craft.
The school, situated in Hardag village beside Ranchi-Khunti Road, is about 13km away from Ranchi airport.
