Kottar diocese Bishop Peter Remugius has urged the State as well as the Centre to take immediate steps to allay the fear among the fisherfolk regarding the commissioning of the nuclear plant at Kudankulam.
When he was contacted about his stand on the power project as the fishermen from the eastern coast had stayed off the sea for the 14th day today, the bishop said it was unfair on the part of the police to resort to lathi charge and bursting of tear gas shells against fishermen at Idinthakarai.
He said that they were responsible for the death of two fishermen, one at Tuticorin and another at Idinthakarai. Moreover, the entry of police in the church at Idinthakarai had hurt the sentiments of the people living in and around the area.
The people were well aware of the disaster caused in Chernobyl in Russia and Fukushima in Japan. Governments across the world are keen to ensure the welfare of people and have started closing nuclear projects.
But instead of allaying the fear among the fishermen, the government had completed the loading of forty percent of the fuel at unit 1 of the KKNPP.
Hence, he urged the government to take steps to allay the fear among the residents and he wanted the government to look at commissioning of wind mills and hydel projects.
The bishop, who is also the president of Thiruvarut Peravai, urged the people to ensure communal harmony.
