KOLKATA, 2 OCT: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC)'s drive to set up community toilets in the city has received a major setback following objections from various quarters. The Centre has given Rs 17 lakh to set up each community toilet. The two-storeyed buildings will house toilets and wash room for women on the ground floor and for men on the first floor. The KMC put granite stones on the walls to strengthen them. KMC has also proposed to set up mobile toilets in the congested central business district. “There is an acute shortage of toilets in the city, particularly for women, and mobile toilets would be of great help,” said senior civic officials. The KMC proposes to set up 66 community toilets in the city out of which construction of 30 has begun. The move has received a jolt as owners of buildings where the toilets are coming up are raising objections. They met senior officials and said they would not allow any construction as the toilets would not be cleaned daily and would be stinking after a month. The residents of Beliaghata Main Road said the toilet that is coming up almost opposite Khanna High School will force people to walk on the street risking their lives. The toilet on Lenin Sarani is facing a similar problem.Civic officials said the toilets will be maintained by local youths and they will engage sweepers to clean them. They said the one on Southern Avenue opposite the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture is cleaned regularly and the residents of the area did not raise any objection. “ It is very difficult to work in a city where people are more inclined to raise objections before the commencement of any project and it is difficult to make people realise the ground reality,” said civic officials.
