KOLKATA : The Kolkata Municipal Corporation's (KMC) dream to turn the city green seems to have gone sour. For the initial interest shown by the civic body in the project has waned as it is unable to fix a date to flag off this year's plantation drive. Previously, KMC on the occasion of World Environment Day, 5 June, would start their plantation drive under the name of Kolkata Sabujayan (Green Kolkata). "No specific date has yet been fixed for starting the plantation drive. However, some erratic campaigns are being undertaken,' a civic official, said. When the much-hyped project started first in 2006, huge advertisements had been put up displaying the achievement of the civic body. Remnants of that campaign can even now be seen on billboards near the city police headquarters at Lalbazar and in Camac Street. A joint plantation drive with the state forest department was also mooted. The state forest department was to plant saplings on the major thoroughfares of the city while the lanes and by lanes was looked after by the civic body. However, two years down the line, the picture appears different. Civic officials said that there has been a decline in the interest of the top bosses, which has adversely affected the plantation drive. Moreover, even the arrangement with the state forest department seems to have fallen flat on its face with the civic body and the state forest department carrying out separate plantation drives. However, the timings of the plantations in 2007 were coordinated. But this year things were chaotic. When asked, Mr Khan accepted the delay in starting the drive. Pointing out to the reasons he said that this year the plantation drive would be borough specific and the process of coordinating and communicating with the details of the drive became time consuming. "We have asked the borough chairmen to give us a time which would be convenient for the councillors. Accordingly we will start the plantation drive in the specific boroughs,' the MMiC said. Regarding the issue of coordinating the plantation drive with the forest department, Mr Khan added that the he is already holding talks with forest department officials regarding the matter. "We will definitely plant around 80,000 saplings by the end of this monsoon,' Mr Khan assured
