KOLKATA, 10 OCT: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will examine the pollution level of the Hooghly river after immersion of idols of goddess Durga, member, mayor-in-council (parks, garden & sports), Mr Debasish Kumar, said. The civic authorities will collect water sample from the Hooghly river before and after the immersion and send them to the Pollution Control Board's (PCB) laboratory for testing, said Mr Kumar. He said after getting the results, the KMC will discuss the future course of action with the PCB to reduce the pollution in the river. Pollution level of the Hooghly will come down this year as most of the puja committees have agreed to purchase Durga idols with non-toxic colours, Mr Kumar said.
Many Puja committees responded to the appeal and told the clay model makers to use non-toxic paint, he said. This year the agency distributed lead-free paints to the artisans to reduce water pollution. Mr Kumar, DG electrical, DG lighting, DG civil, along with senior police officers, today visited Nimtala ghat and Baje Kadamtala ghat to inspect the preparation for immersion.
According to the KMC officials, more than 400 persons would be deployed at 14 ghats and other 10 places in the city where the idols will be taken for immersions. Flowers and other materials will be dumped in the vat installed at the ghats.
The debris will be removed within 24 hours from the immersion of idols. Mr Kumar, along with other senior officials of the KMC, will monitor the immersion. sns
