Kodagu gets Rs 3.35 cr more for MGNREGS

The government has released an additional sum of Rs 3.35 crore for the ambitious Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). With this, a sum of Rs 22 crore was available for the district during 2010-11.
The State government has released the funds to Gram Panchayats online. Of the available funds, a sum of Rs 12 crore has been utilised so far. In the meantime, the government has passed an order to increase the wages from Rs 100 to Rs 125 per day with effect from January 1.
An action plan for Rs 107 crore under Employment Guarantee scheme was prepared for Kodagu district during 2010-11. The government has sanctioned Rs 54 crore. A sum of Rs 12 crore has been utilised so far. The remaining Rs 42 crore needs to be utilised effectively by March end.
Kodagu district receives heavy rains between June and October. No funds can be effectively utilised during rainy season. The works have to be undertaken after December. Hence, inspite of additional funds, Kodagu is not in a position to utilise the funds fully.
By December end, a sum of Rs 880.33 lakh has been utilised. A sum of Rs 1916.20 lakh was available for the district. As many as 1,834 works were undertaken till December end. In Madikeri taluk, a sum of Rs 185.46 lakh was utilised for 539 works.
In Somwarpet taluk, a total of 553 works have been undertaken by utilising Rs 306.13 lakh. In Virajpet taluk, a sum of Rs 387.55 lakh was utilised and 742 works have been undertaken under MGNREGS.
