Kolkata statistical institute faces eco-fire for killing ponds

The city-based Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), an institution dedicated to scientific research, now finds itself under the scanner for "unscientific' activities. Experts fear the institute's overdrive to beautify its BT Road campus will wreak havoc on the campus' biodiversity. According to scientists and eco-activists in the city, ISI's construction of artificial embankments around three ponds in the campus is alarming. Experts said ISI authorities have even stifled voices of dissent raised by scientists and researchers associated with ISI. In a letter addressed to ISI authorities, R L Brahmachary, former professor at ISI's Biology division and now adviser to two projects, states: "Scientists of ISI will face difficulties in collecting samples from the ponds, for there is no longer any edge of the water to stand on. Frogs and toads will be unable to breed. Snails like
