TIRUNELVELI: Hinting that the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) might house eight 1,000 MW reactors instead of the originally planned six units, S.K. Jain, Nuclear Power Corporation India Limited (NPCIL) Chairman and Managing Director, has said that Jaitapur in Maharashtra would have six French nuclear reactors each with the capacity of 1,650 MW.
Speaking to reporters at Koodankulam on Friday, Dr. Jain, after attending the 22nd joint coordination committee meeting with Russian delegates, said India, one of the fastest developing economies, would be in need of 8 lakh MW by 2032 and hence it would have to augment its power generation.
The NPCIL, now operating 17 units across the country with a total installed capacity of 4,120 MWe and currently building 5 units with a total installed capacity of 2,660 MWe, was planning for massive expansion programmes in the existing as well as new sites.
Though the Inter Governmental Agreement between India and Russia was for the construction of 6 X 1,000 pressurised water reactors at Koodankulam, the NPCIL would consider revising the total number of reactors at this coastal site to eight.
