The Central government has finally given the go-ahead to the proposed 10,000 MW nuclear power plant in Kovvada in Srikakulam after a review of the safety aspects following the tsunami-linked nuclear disaster in Japan. This will be the biggest nuclear power plant in the country when completed.
The Centre had kept on hold the Kovvada project following protests by locals and the nuclear mishap in Japan in May. After re-assessing the safety aspects, the Centre gave its clearance to the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited, which will build the plant. According to officials, the Centre has given all necessary clearances to go ahead with the construction work. As against the present total installed capacity of 4,500 MW of nuclear energy in the country, the Kovvada plant alone, when completed, will generate 10,000 MW.
