KARWAR: Karnataka Chief Minister Jagdish Shettar on Wednesday remained noncommittal on demands to resume the sand trade from Kali River to Goa, stating that he had to discuss the issue with senior officials. Addressing a large gathering at Tagore Beach, here, after inaugurating the new bus stand and laying the foundation stone for many projects at Karwar, Shettar said: “It is difficult to take any immediate decision on the resumption of Kali River sand transportation to Goa, as requested by Fisheries, Science & Technology Minister Anand Asnotikar.” “But I will assure to deliberate the matter with senior officers and see what best I can do in this regard,” Shettar said. Responding to a demand for a medical college at Karwar, Shettar said he would try and make a provision for a medical college during the next budget. “If that is not possible, I will permit a private institution to set up a medical college here,” said the Karnataka chief minister. Earlier in his address, Asnotikar requested Shettar to get the Halakki Vakkaligas Community of Karnataka declared as a Scheduled Tribe. He also asked Shettar to request the prime minister to make the payment to the Sea-bird evacuees, as directed by the Supreme Court, without any further delay. On the occasion, Shettar unveiled the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Henja Naik, a warrier who fought against the Britishers. District caretaker Minister Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri and PWD Minister C M Udasi were among the many politicians and officials attending the function.
