Lack of awareness hampers city waste management

Lack of awareness remains a major problem in solid waste management as people in the city and municipal areas continue to dump wastes in an unplanned way. About half of the solid waste generated every day cannot be collected due to their unplanned and haphazard dumping, a major challenge for solid waste management, speakers said at the second Bangladesh Solid Waste Management Conference held in the Sonargaon Hotel on Monday. Limited scopes for recycling, difficulties to find the land for landfill project, inadequate budget and environmental pollution like ground and surface water contamination are some other significant challenges for waste management, they told the conference. Practitioners of solid waste management in the six city corporations participated in the daylong conference organised by the Dhaka City Corporation with the cooperation of the Japan International Cooperation Agency. DCC chief conservancy officer Maksudur Rahman Chowdhury and additional resident representative of JICA Eiichiro Cho addressed the inaugural session of the conference. M Yoshida, chairman of JICA advisory committee, and Dhaka mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka were present at the closing session. The Dhaka City Corporation and JICA worked together and prepared a Clean Dhaka Master Plan in 2005 and started another four-year technical support project in February 2007, styled
