Lack of funds, deforestation wiping out Sindh's forests: Seminar on forestry perspectives

  • 17/04/2001

The forests in Sindh (Pakistan) are on the verge of extinction due to the lack of development funds, low or non-existent flood and canal water supply, high incidence of illicit tree cutting , grazing, occupation of forest lands through encroachment and unauthorized leases. If this state of affairs continued, almost all forests would soon disappear, leaving deserts in their place and causing environmental degradation and biodiversity loss, besides sufferings to the millions of the poor rural population in the province who depend upon them for subsistent livelihood.
