The much-talked-about Bill to repeal the Urban Land Ceiling Act may not be taken up in the current session of the Assembly. The Bill did not find place in the list of Bills to be tabled in the Assembly on Wednesday for discussion and approval in the next two weeks. Official sources told this correspondent that though the revenue department had prepared the Bill a few days ago, the same was not sent to the Assembly secretariat yet. "We are waiting for green signal from the powers that be,' sources said. The state Cabinet was forced to take a decision on repealing the Act following pressure from the Centre. At the same time, the state was unwilling to part with the Act before raising hundreds of crores of rupees towards the regularisation of ULC lands. "It is likely that the government would delay the Bill and seek six months' time to repeal it,' sources said. The speaker, Mr K.R. Suresh Reddy, on Tuesday announced that several Bills including those on regularising agriculture ceiling lands, IIITs, technological university and amendments to municipal acts vis-a-vis urban development would be taken up for discussion.
