KOLKATA, 16 NOV: The proposed nuclear power plant at Haripur in East Midnapore will come up only if local people willingly give their land for the project, said chairman of Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) and secretary of Department of Atomic energy (DAE), Mr Anil Kakodkar, in Kolkata this afternoon. Mr Kakodkar said, local people are the most important stakeholders and nothing will be done against their wishes. It is expected that affected landowners should get satisfactory rehabilitation packages and it should be done with human touch. He further said, people should be made aware that land requirement to set up a nuclear power plant is less compared to a conventional power plant and there are no hazards of pollution as well. The people should know that an overall development of the area will take place once the project becomes operational. Initiatives should also be taken to make people understand about the benefits of the project, where six units of a capacity of 1000 MW each will be constructed. It will take more than seven years to complete the project. Moreover, nuclear power generation in the country will cross 7,000 MW in the next three years. Currently, generation of nuclear power in the country is about 4,000 MW and an addition of 3,160 MW can be generated with setting up of few more plants. Construction work of two power plants in Rajasthan is complete and they will be made operational soon. Later, two more plants will come up in the same state. ;SNS
