Landslide threat in eight districts

The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) yesterday warned the public to be vigilant on sudden landslides that could occur in eight districts Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Badulla, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Kalutara, Galle and Matara as a result of torrential rains. A spokesman for the Diaster Management Centre told the Daily News that those who live close to Galagedara, Nawalapitiya, Suduhumpola, Bahirawakanda, Mahaiyawa, Peradeniya, Thennakumbura, Ambagamuwa, Kothmale, Haldummilla, Beragala-Haputhala road, Beragala-Wellawaya road, Koslanda, Niwithigala, Kalawana, Kolonna, Ratnapura, Pelmadulla, Kahawatta, Alapatha, Bulathkohupitiya, Deraniyagala, Yatiyantota, Kegalle, Aranayaka, Ruwanwella, Bulathsinhala, Horana, Palindanuwara, Walallawita, Neluwa, Yakkalamulla, Pitabeddara, Pasgoda, Mulatiyana and Deniyaya should be alert on landslides and floods. He said that the Meteorology Department has informed the development of torrential rains within the next 48 hours in these areas. High rainfall exceeding over 100 mm has been indicated for these areas. It has been further confirmed by the NBRO following its landslide disaster maps. He said that Police Stations, District Secretariats, Divisional Secretariats, Mayors and Chairman of Pradeshiya Shabas in these areas have been informed on this emergency situation to take precautionary action. "Six deaths have been reported on April 27 in Ingiriya, Kalutara due to landslides," he said. A woman was also killed in a landslide in Yatiyantota yesterday. He said a disaster situation has been declared yesterday in Ratnapura following extensive floods. Schools affected by floods in Ratnapura District were closed yesterday. He said a landslide has occurred in Opanayake and traffic was disrupted on the Colombo-Badulla Road yesterday. Rivers Kalu, Kelani and Ging had started to spill over due to prevailing heavy rains and people who live in these areas should be on alert. Around 170 people have been affected owing to floods caused by heavy rains in Kalutara District. Disaster Relief Service Ministry's National Disaster Management Centre's Director N.D. Hettiarachchi told the Daily News that the centre is collecting information to finalise correct figures on damaged houses with the assistance of district and divisional secretaries. Compensation will be provided to families of victims under the Relief Assistance Scheme. The evaluation is being carried out further to offer the compensations for partially and completely damaged houses. A spokesman from the Meteorology Department said that there will be showers and thundershowers at times in several places around the Island. The "Nagis" cyclone was about 600 km Northeast of Jaffna yesterday and it is likely to move in northwestward. Intermittent rain accompanied by fairly strong winds will continue in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and Northwestern provinces. Meanwhile, a spokesman from the Fisheries Ministry said that eight boats which were tied up at the Fisheries Harbour in Mirissa have been damaged due to the cyclone. There were 300 boats at the moment in the harbour and two boats which have not been properly tied up were totally damaged.
