Large-scale felling and transportation of costly timber from the jungle areas have resumed in Sanguem taluka. Though hundreds of teak and other prized trees have been illegally cut and transported from the remote areas of Wadem and Netravali since the last two years, authorities have been silent in the matter. In the past few months, about 25-30 teak trees have been cut and transported to unknown destinations, locals told Herald. The forest department had grown a large number of teak and other trees in the forest areas of Sanguem taluka. Though the forest department may not have records of the number of trees planted by its staffers, a mere visit to the jungle areas of this taluka, particularly at Netravali, Bhati and Wadem, would indicate the number of trees felled in the area. "Forest officials are aware that the trees are being cut, but they have failed to nab the timber thieves,' complained a local. Incidentally, though the forest department has gates installed at strategic locations at Bhati, Netravali, Rivona and Uguem, the illegal activity continues unabated.
