Kozhikode: The Western Ghats Janakeeya Samiti has called for a dawn-to-dusk hartal in the hilly regions of Kozhikode on Monday in protest against the decision to implement the recommendations of the high level working group (HLWG) headed by K Kasturirangan. Both UDF and LDF, along with farmer organisations and church groups, have extended their support to the hartal in a bid to ratchet up their protest against the decision of the Union ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) to turn 60,000 sq km of the Western Ghats into ESA.
LDF district committee said that the MoEF decision will adversely impact the livelihood of people residing in the hilly regions. “Though the LDF had repeatedly pointed out that the recommendations of the Madhav Gadgil and Kasturirangan committees would be detrimental to the interests of the state, the state government has miserably failed in presenting the stand of Kerala to the MoEF,” the LDF statement said.
The hartal would be observed at Thiruvambadi, Kodenchery, Mukkam, Thamarassery, Omassery, Puthupadi, Koodaranji, Kodiyathoor, Kurachundu and Chakkittapara. While the Western Ghats Janakeeya Samiti convenor, Boss Jacob said that they had called for a district-wide hartal, both LDF and UDF have clarified that their support to the hartal is limited to just hilly regions.
