Leaking taps, pipes waste 35 per cent water

These statistics can startle you. Almost 35 per cent of water supplied to Amdavadis is wasted due to leaks in water supply lines and household taps. Salinity ingress in south Gujarat has increased from nine per cent in 1961 to 23 per cent today. Increasing instances of illegal limestone mining in Kutch are responsible for escalating salinity ingress in the coastal areas. Receding groundwater tables, increasing salinity ingress, wastage of drinking water in cities, contamination of water and feasibility of power projects to supplement irrigation needs are some of the issues that were addressed by members belonging to various NGOs and public organisations working towards water resource management in Gujarat.
