KOLKATA, Feb. 17: A three-storeyed leather goods manufacturing unit in Kasba Industrial Estate was completely gutted and leather products worth several lakhs were reduced to ashes in a fire that broke out around 8 am today. However, there were no reports of any injury or casualty. Seventeen fire tenders fought the blaze for more than five hours before bringing it under control. A local resident first noticed the flames billowing out of the window of a room on the first floor of the factory, located in the Phase I of the Kasba Industrial Estate. He reported the incident to the Tiljala police station who in turn informed the fire brigade. Firemen, led by Mr Gopal Bhattacharjee, director-in-charge of the state fire and emergency service department rushed to the spot. A huge quantity of inflammable articles, chemicals, adhesives and various types of leather goods were stored in the first floor of the building, which allowed the flames to spread quickly to the other floors before fire-fighting operation could begin. "Initially four fire tenders were pressed into service. Having failed to bring the flames under control, 13 more fire tenders were brought to the site from neighbouring fire stations,' police said. "Water was fetched from the reservoir of a private hospital located close to the ill-fated factory, more than 80 firemen fought the blaze. "We have sought a forensic probe to find out the actual cause behind the fire. A complaint under sections 35 and 11 (C) of the Fire Prevention Act would be lodged with the police against the owner of the factory which lacked adequate fire protection measures,' Mr Bhattacharjee said.
