In a first of its kind initiative for energy conservation undertaken by the city, the Jan Marg will be lit up by Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). An order of around 218 LEDs has been placed with a Pune based firm. A grant of nearly Rs 65 lakh has been given by the Central Government. The LEDs are superior in quality and will enable conservation of energy. While LEDs consume around 37 watts of power, the fittings at present require nearly 260 watts. While other bulbs require around five minutes to start, the LEDs light up instantly. With better quality of light, the LEDs have a life span of 15 years. Executive Engineer of Electrical Division, Municipal Corporation, Surinder Singh Khandola said, "With the LEDs expected to arrive by September, the work will be completed by the same time. While the order has been placed with a Pune-based company, the material for the fittings will come from Canada.' He added it is a first of its kind experiment and the energy conservation will be high. "At a time when we are looking towards energy efficient alternatives, it will be a unique experiment,' said Singh.
