Legislators pull up rural water official for laxity

Jan. 7: MLAs of Prakasam district objected to the laxity of Rural Water Supply (RWS) officials in providing drinking water facility in government schools. They demanded severe action against officials during the district-level vigilance and monitory committee meet here on Friday. MLAs, Messrs G.V. Seshu, A. Krishnamohan, K. Narayana Reddy, Y. Suresh and G. Ravikumar, became angry when RWS superintending engineer, Mr Mr V. Gopalakrishna, failed to tell them to how many schools the RWS had provided drinking water. The MLC, Mr Dachuri Rami Reddy, said that despite having Rs 2 crore, the RWS had only provided drinking water facility in 26 schools out of 646. Mr Seshu deplored that students of Kondepi area were drinking fluoride water and were troubled for toilets. The ZP chairperson, Ms K. Arunamma, lodged a complaint that no proposals were made, despite allocating Rs 25 lakh for the construction of toilets. Mr Narayana Reddy alleged that officials of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) were misusing the scheme by drawing funds in the name of fake beneficiaries. Mr Ravikumar demanded installation of a signaling system to curb accidents on the Medarmetla ring road. Mr Narayana Reddy deplored the state of Markapuram-Podili road. Mr Krishnamohan sought the construction of toilets to curb open defecation. The Union minister of state for textiles, Ms Panabaka Lakshmi, directed the collector, Mr Kantilal Dande, to take action agai-nst RWS officials for their laxity in discharging duties.
