A LEOPARD fell into a forest department trap early on Tuesday morning at Chandrapur district's Sarandi village, close to Vejgaon village where leopard attacks have been frequent.
Officials, however, are not sure if it was the same problem animal against which shoot orders had been issued. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) B Majumdar had issued the order on Sunday after a leopard had killed two persons of Vejgaon village and injured many others over the past one month.
"We saw no movement of the problem animal near Vejgaon over the past two days. Yesterday shortly after midnight, a leopard had entered a house on Sarandi village and attacked two goats. When the lady of the house raised alarm, it ran away after killing a goat injuring another. When we came to know, we rushed there along a sharpshooter and a tranquillizer. We had a cage trap near Sarandi and the leopard fell into it. We are not yet sure if it is the same animal. If we notice no activity around Vejgaon and Sarandi over the next few days, chances are that we have trapped the right animal," said Divisional Forest Officer Rama Rao.
Officials took the leopard to a safe place away from crowds. "Thankfully, it was early morning and not many people were around," Rama Rao said.
The officials, however, are in a fix where to keep the animal. It can't be released into any forest since it could cause the same problem at the new place, they feel. So, they can only hope to send it to rescue centres in Borivli in Mumbai and Junnar near Pune. "Both centres are full to capacity. We will need some time before we can find a safe destination," said Majumdar.
