The Lahore High Court (LHC) Green Bench member Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah on Firday summoned Environment Protection Department (EPD) secretary for June 8 on a petition against the disposal of wastewater into the Ravi, which has become a serious threat to human beings.
During the proceedings on Friday, the judge directed the EPD officer to produce a list of industries disposing wastewater into Ravi.
The officer presented a list of more than 1,200 industries, saying that the EPD officials had personally visited the industries and served notices on them. He added that the list was incomplete at the moment as there were still some industries that were disposing waste into the Ravi and the officials were still in the process of collecting detailed information about them.
The judge inquired about solutions to this menace, asking for efficient and plausible methods of water treatment. To this, the EPD official said that were more than 50 different machineries used for this purpose. When asked about their cost and manufacturers, the official said he needed time to collect the required particulars.
The judge reproached him for having no knowledge about whether the machinery was available in the country or not. He added that the official was not able to bring complete information despite a passage of 15 days since issuance of the last court direction.
He further ordered the official to bring suggestion about homegrown technology, available at cheaper rate, which could be used for this purpose.
As per the court’s direction, the petitioner submitted a list of proposed names for the commission. He proposed 12 names, on which the advocate general raised objection and requested the court that the commission should be smaller comprising five to seven members at the most.
The judge then ordered the official to submit a new list, containing five to seven names, adding that the commission must also comprise some industries’ presidents.
The petition was moved on behalf of the Pakistan Environmental Law Association and the Lahore Conservation Society.
The counsel for the petitioners, Ahmad Rafay Alam, said that this is the most polluted river in Pakistan and is considered one of the most polluted rivers of the world.
