Loggers decimate a Solomons island

When a Malaysian company offered a swag of inducements in return for logging concessions on their land, the 130 residents of Mbeiporo, an impoverished village on Vella Vanella island in Solomon Islands, found it hard to resist. The Mega Corporation promised jobs, roads and bridges, and royalties to pay for community infrastructure. But one year after logging began, the once lush tropical rainforests of eastern Vella Vanella, in Western Province, resemble a battle zone. Instead of being logged selectively, the forest has been razed.
